projek aardwolfThe animals depicted in Ever Heard of an Aardwolf? fall into the category of stranger-than-fiction. They may be weird, but they're real. Barry Moser's illustrations and his daughter Madeline's prose lend grace and gravity to the loris, the bush baby, and, of course, the aardwolf (a hyena-like African mammal that eats mostly insects). (Ages 6 to 10)

Grade 1-4?Have you "ever heard of a horse? (say: HORS) Of course!!!" reads the last entry in this fascinating look at unusual animals. Some people may well have heard of an aardwolf or worn a sweater made of vicuna fur. Okapis may be O.K. and flying foxes familiar, but very few people will recognize all of the 19 creatures presented here with clarity and simplicity. They include the uakari, whose face turns bright red in the sun; and the visacha, which likes to decorate its burrow with bones, trash, and jewelry. Further details on each creature are included at the end. Every face is remarkably expressive, while the use of muted tones and bold textures magnify the strangeness of each animal. Barry Moser's engravings could stand alone, but Madeline Moser's text certainly does justice to her father's work.?Lisa Wu Stowe, Great Neck Library, Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

projek aardwolf PreSchool-Grade 3–After sleeping through the hot East African afternoon, it is time for Mama Hyena and her child to go hunting. Pinduli promises to stay close by, but then trots off. She comes across a pack of wild dogs, a lion, and a zebra, and all tease her about her looks. She rolls in the dirt until her striped coat is a pallid gray and her ears are pinned back. The animals think that she is a "ghost" that has come for them. All of the creatures then confess that they teased the young hyena because another animal had made fun of them. The "ghost" understands and advises them to "find your tormentors and make peace…. And always leave a bit of every meal as an offering." By story's end, the animals have reconciled, and with all the food offerings left, Pinduli and her mother never have to scrounge around looking for meals. The animals' expressions and antics are hilarious and endearing; Cannon has pulled off quite a feat in creating a cuddly hyena protagonist. This touching book about personal growth and self-acceptance gently demonstrates how the actions of one can have far-reaching effects on many others. An appealing and worthwhile purchase.–Mary N. projek aardwolf"Extensively revised since the 3rd ed. (2001), this book by C. Stuart and T. Stuart (founders, African-Arabian Wildlife Research Centre) is the definitive photographic guide to the mammals of southern Africa. Standing in contrast to those regional guides that emphasize only Africa s larger mammals, it covers the rich diversity of small mammals: golden moles, sengis, hedgehogs and shrews, bats, hares and rabbits, and rodents. The introduction considers the major biotic zones, mammal identification, and conservation and management in southern Africa. Following are concise accounts of mammal families and subfamilies, color-coded to facilitate their location within the text. Especially useful are figures depicting the tail, facial conformation, and ear conformation of different bat groups. Identification is based on 470 excellent photographs emphasizing distinguishing features, along with 275 distribution maps. The 350 species accounts cover description, distribution, habitat, behavior, food, and reproduction. More than just a field guide, this concise reference nicely complements the comprehensive The Mammals of the Southern Africa Subregion, rev. by J. D. Skinner and C. T. Chimiimba (3rd ed., CH, Sept 06, 44-0035). Inclusion of the usually overlooked small mammals make this book a valuable addition to mammalian libraries. Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers." --ALA Choice, February 2008

projek aardwolf Since its original publication in 1993, The Safari Companion has been the best field guide to observing and understanding the behavior of African mammals. An indispensable tool for naturalists traveling to Africa, this new edition has been revised to acknowledge the enthusiasm to those watching these magnificent animals at zoos and wildlife parks, and on film.

The Safari Companion enables readers to recognize and interpret visible behavioral activities, such as courtship rituals, territorial marking, aggression, and care of young. Each account of over 80 species includes a behavioral table in which the unique actions of the hoofed mammals, carnivores, and primates are described for easy reference. In addition, useful maps show the major national boundaries, vegetation zones, and game parks relevant to the guide. The book includes an extensive glossary, as well as tips on wildlife photography, a list of organizations working to protect African wildlife, and advice on where and when to see the animals.

projek aardwolf "A work of tremendous scope. . . . Amateur naturalists and tourists to the parks of Africa and finally professionals will find this a stimulating, well-documented summary."--John F. Eisenberg, Florida Museum of Natural History

"We have seen in the field how very helpful and informative The Behavior Guide is. Our knowledgeable safari guides turned often to their prized and already well-thumbed copies, and we continue to refer to ours now that we are back home."--Douglas F. Williamson, Jr., National Council, World Wildlife Fund, U.S.

"A fascinating, perceptive, and enjoyable travel companion heightens the pleasure of being afield. The Behavior Guide to African Mammals is that ideal companion. Lucid, accurate, and marvelously illustrated, the book is a basic reference for anyone interested in natural history."--George B. Schaller, author of The Serengheti Lion and The Deer and the Tiger

Projek Aardwolf

projek aardwolf This is a complete guide to the mammal fauna of Africa. Covering all known species (around 460), this guide will enable identification of all land mammals likely to be seen anywhere in Africa. Detailed accounts, with colour illustrations, are provided for most species, but some complex small mammal groups are summarized by genera. The colour illustrations show both sexes in sexually dimorphic species, and there are also a wealth of line drawings illustrating typical behaviours, the function of camouflaged or disruptive markings and the details of interspecific variation among closely allied species. Distribution maps show the ranges of most species covered.
