AFRIKA KORPS (Images of War)

AFRIKA KORPS Images of War Afrika Korps is an illustrated record of Field-Marshal Erwin Rommel and his desert troops that fought in North Africa against British and Commonwealth forces between 1941 and 1943. Using previously rare and unpublished photographs, many of which have come from the albums of individuals who took part in the desert campaign, it presents a unique visual account of the famous Afrika-Korps' operations and equipment. Thanks to an informative caption with every photograph Afrika Korps vividly portrays how the German Army fought across the uncharted and forbidding desert wilderness of North Africa.

Throughout the book it examines how Rommel and his Afrika Korps were so successful and includes an analysis of desert war tactics which Rommel himself had indoctrinated. These tactics quickly won the Afrika-Korps a string of victories between 1941 and 1942.

The photographs that accompany the book are a fascinating collection that depicts life in the Afrika-Korps, as seen through the lens of the ordinary soldier.

Afrikakorps: Army Luftwaffe Kriegsmarine Waffen-SS : Tropical Uniforms, Insignia & Equipment of the German Soldier in World War II

Afrikakorps: Army Luftwaffe Kriegsmarine Waffen-SS : Tropical Uniforms, Insignia & Equipment of the German Soldier in World War II Color photographs of rare uniform items, associated insignia, and field equipment used in the Wehrmacht's tropical campaigns are outstanding. Moreover, the selection of period black-and-white photographs is exceptional - nearly all of them are unpublished and all should be of interest to both the historian and militaria collector. Unfortunately, a number of their accompanying captions contain errors or omissions, and often fail to provide context of a respective unit's operations in the North African or Mediterranean campaigns. I realize that this work is not intended to be an operational history or order-of-battle tabulation, but found that the lack of more background perspective was dissatisfying. I haven't yet seen the companion volume, which covers documents and paper items - perhaps it provides the historical framework that is lacking in Volume 1.

Afrikakorps: Rommel's Tropical Army In Original Color

Afrikakorps: Rommel's Tropical Army In Original Color The soldiers fighting in the deserts of North Africa did not fight on a black & white canvas the war was in color! This book, for the first time ever in print, presents a pictorial chronology of the campaign in Africa and the Deutschen Afrikakorps (DAK) the German Afrikakorps the way the soldiers themselves experienced itthe way they lived it: in color. It offers more than 150 photographs derived from what at that time, was revolutionary original color slide film. These pictures portray the leaders, men and equipment of the Afrikakorps from the arrival of its first units in Tripoli, Tunisia through its astounding advance across the Libyan Desert to Egypt and its eventual withdrawal back to Tunisia after the bitter, lost struggle with the British at El Alamein. Heavy artillery in position, antitank guns firing missions, cooks making noodles; Panzers on the move, aircraft, weapons and equipment glimpses into the everyday existence of the Afrikakorps soldier in the wastes of the Libyan Desert and the rugged terrain of Tunisia all of these are here in the original quality color with many detailed captions. This book offers an entirely new view of the war in Africa that will prove a useful reference for veterans, historians, military modelers, re-enactors and militaria collectors alike. As an added bonus, the final section includes color photos of the subsequent events in Sicily and Southern Italy. A brief glossary is also included. This is how the war in Africa was really fought: in color!

Das Afrika Korps: Erwin Rommel and the Germans in Africa, 1941-43

Das Afrika Korps: Erwin Rommel and the Germans in Africa, 1941-43 In his latest account of German soldiers in combat in World War II, Franz Kurowski journeys into the desert with the Afrika Korps, graphically depicting what it was like to sweat beneath the African sun, to taste the gritty sand, to serve under a brilliant commander like Erwin Rommel. From 1941 to 1943, this fighting force waged an impressive campaign that turned Rommel into the Desert Fox and secured the Afrika Korps a legendary place in military history. The Afrika Korps deployed to Africa as Germany's Italian allies teetered on the brink of collapse in early 1941. With high spirit and aggressive courage, the Afrika Korps roared into action and battled the British back and forth across the Western Desert--at places like El Agheila, Gazala, Tobruk, and El Alamein--for much of the next two years. The campaign then shifted into Tunisia, where the British onslaught combined with the arrival of the Americans and growing supply difficulties to force the Afrika Korps to surrender in May 1943. Kurowski's narrative focuses on the men who did the fighting, who endured not only enemy attacks but also the extremes of the desert climate, who experienced moments of sheer terror as well as occasions of humor, who saw war's savagery and its surprising, if brief, civility, and who counted themselves proud to be members of Germany's Afrika Korps. FRANZ KUROWSKI, who served as a journalist with the German Army in World War II, has written numerous books about the war. His other works include Jump into Hell, Panzer Aces, Panzers Aces II, Panzer Aces III, Panzergrenadier Aces, Infantry Aces, Luftwaffe Aces, and The Brandenburger Commandos.

Afrikakorps: Infantry Attacks

Afrikakorps: Infantry Attacks Field Marshal Erwin Rommel exerted an almost hypnotic influence not only over his own troops but also over the Allied soldiers of the Eighth Army in World War II. Even when the legend surrounding his invincibility was overturned at El Alamein, the aura surrounding Rommel himself remained unsullied. In this classic study of the art of war, Rommel analyzes the tactics that lay behind his success. First published in 1937, it quickly became a highly regarded military textbook and also brought its author to the attention of Adolf Hitler. Rommel was to subsequently advance through the ranks to the high command in World War II.

Das Afrika Korps: Rommel as Military Commander

Das Afrika Korps: Rommel as Military Commander Lewin is precise and concise in his appraisal of Rommel's abilities as a commander, starting with 7 Panzer in France and going right through the desert to Normandy in 1944. He uses as his notes the Rommel Papers edited by Liddel Hart (another excellent source, this time edited in the 1950s)and I benefitted from reading the two in tandem. No punches are pulled, there is no favouritism towards any flag, but a truly first class analysis of Rommel's, along with his gifts and limitations as a commander.
